Studded Tyres Anyone ?

This morning I noticed that the Grand Union canal was starting to freeze over, which typically happens if it's been cold for a few days. If it stays cold for much longer then we'll soon be needing studs like this geezer.

Pretty cool. Thread over at; Mtbr.com - Ice Riding in a NY Swamp.

Having driven a car with studded tyres (whilst working in Sweden) I was amazed at the amount of grip available on ice. You could really hoon around with v.little slip. Soft snow wasn't so great and they were lethal on plain ol'tarmac - that'd thawd back in the city.

They look fun on a MTB...

I haven't read the linked article but I suspect from that photo that the 'studs' are most likely self-tappers shoved through his tyres :) ?!

Crikey, reading the latest additions to the MTBR thread, it appears that some peeps do actually apply self tappers to tyres. So well done Brumster.
